Prof. Rob Benedetto and SSP14 in Calculus class 2016 Program Description Three Weeks. The Amherst Summer Science Program offers three weeks of Amherst-level math and science. Calculus. Students have daily calculus classes for all three weeks, including homework and exams. Prof. Gregory Call, Mathematics Prof. Gabriel Sosa Castillo, Mathematics Prof. Robert Benedetto, Mathematics Chemistry and Biology. Students have three weeks of Chemistry and Biology with laboratories. Dr. Richmond Ampiah-Bonney, Chemistry Dr. Julie Emerson, Biology Writing. Students have three weeks of a writing seminar in Bioethics. Prof. Jyl Gentzler, Philosophy and Director of the Writing Center This includes workshops and individual appointments with staff from the Amherst College Writing Center. Studying in the Q Center (with air conditioning) Should you consider summer science? SSP is aimed at incoming students with a strong interest in medicine, biology, neuroscience or chemistry. First priority will be given to students with weaker high school preparation in calculus or the physical sciences, to students with fewer resources to help prepare for college, and to help retain students from less traditional backgrounds in the sciences. Typical SSP students may be: · premedical students who want to get a sense of the science and calculus requirements and to receive placement advising; · students who attended high schools with uneven quality or weaker requirements in science and math courses; · students concerned about how they perform on high-stakes math and science exams; · first-generation college students who may desire extra advising and time to get comfortable on campus.

Summer Science Offers: · A three-week introduction to Amherst calculus, science classes and laboratories, and writing · An opportunity to get to know faculty with small classes, lunches and office hours · Advising for premedical, math and science · An introduction to many of Amherst’s academic resources · Information on research and internship opportunities, and a chance to talk to current science majors · A chance to make friends and meet the classmates who will share your fall courses Participation in the SSP is by invitation. Amherst College pays for travel, room and board, and program expenses. Students will be credited for a $1000 to their college account against their student income contribution (expected summer earnings or campus employment) in their freshman year. Sessions with college deans, current students and faculty will provide information on course selection, pre-medical and science requirements and opportunities. Academic Resources. SSP student tutors live and work with the Summer Science students, and offer help during the evening study hall. Faculty are available during office hours; additional tutors and the director of the Moss Quantitative Center work closely with students. Camaraderie and Exploration. SSP isn’t all study and advising. Students have the opportunity to make new friends and explore the Amherst area.
